James Colyer is the Managing Partner of Outlier Capital, responsible for the acquisition strategy and financial management of our businesses. James is something of a finance savant (although he’s much too modest to say so), overseeing everything from new investments to the Outlier portfolio structure to our companies’ finance teams.
While financial metrics are critical for charting Outlier’s path, James has learned that it’s the people that drive the business. He applies this to his business approach, carefully considering the synergy between Outlier and future partners when exploring new investment opportunities in order to ensure that all sides win and win together. James has been with Outlier since its inception and is actively involved on the boards of Pump It Up, Bounce U, Anmark and Realty Executives International.
Prior to Outlier, James was an investment professional at several middle market private equity firms, including Canyon River Capital Partners, Huntsman Gay Global Capital (HGGC) and Sorenson Capital. While at these firms, James was focused on a variety of aspects of the investment process, including deal sourcing, due diligence, deal structuring, deal execution, and portfolio management. Prior to working in private equity, James was an investment banker for Lehman Brothers focused on companies operating in the retail and consumer industries.
In addition to his role at Outlier, James is a board member of Turner Stillhouse, and a former board member of the Arizona Chapter of the Association for Corporate Growth (AZ ACG). Within the AZ ACG, James founded the Young Dealmakers, a networking program focused on professionals under the age of 40. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of Kansas. When he’s not working on deals, James is an avid golfer and die-hard Kansas Jayhawk college basketball fan.
